September 10

We will continue discussing To Kill a Mockingbird in class.

Begin reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. We will begin discussing it in class on Sept. 17, but you should read about half of it this week—through Volume II, Chapter X (page 124 in the Norton Critical Edition).

Write at least 2 journal entries. Remember that your journals are not for plot summaries, but for recording your own thoughts about what you have read.

OPTIONAL: I highly recommend keeping a brief chapter summary separate from your journal. This is just a very quick overview to help you review what you have read, easily locate parts you wish to look up, etc. This is for your own use, not to turn in. If you do not have time to do both, write in your journal and skip the summary. See the attached chapter summary of To Kill a Mockingbird (which I found online) as an example.

OPTIONAL: I also recommend keeping a list of characters with brief descriptions. Like the chapter summaries, this is just for your own use.

OPTIONAL: Instead of a chapter summary and character list, you might try keeping a novel chart using the directions on the attached handout.

IMPORTANT: Next week you will be reading Henry Austen’s “Biographical Notice of the Author” in the back of the Norton Critical Edition of Pride and Prejudice. If you do not have this edition, please let me know before Sept. 10 so that I can bring you a photocopy.

September 17

CLASS ACTIVITY (highly recommended but not required): Join us in Fairpark in downtown Tupelo at 8:00 p.m. on Thurs., September 16 (arrive early to get parking and seats) for a free viewing of the movie of To Kill a Mockingbird. Actress Mary Badham, who played Scout, will speak about how the book and the movie affected her life. I have not been to a movie at Fairpark before, but I suspect we need to bring something to sit on (camp chairs, blankets, etc.) Let’s try to find one another and sit together if possible. http://www.nems360.com/view/full_story/9202137/article-%E2%80%98Scout%E2%80%99-coming-to-Fairpark-in-September?

Finish reading Pride and Prejudice and be prepared to discuss in class.

Write at least 2 journal entries.

Study the literary terms listed on the attached “General Characteristics of the Novel.”

Read Henry Austen’s “Biographical Notice of the Author” in the back of the Norton Critical Edition of Pride and Prejudice.

Read Stirling Bridge #31 (attached) pages 1-5: “Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice: A Novel of Real Reality,” “Austen’s Other Novels,” and “Austen’s Critics.”

For this week, read Aristotle and answer all questions as listed in textbook from pages 5 – top of page 9. (End at Question 28.) This will include the “boxes” – Figures of Speech, Reading Exercise 2-1, and Traditional Logic Review Exercise 2-1. (The book he is talking about in the Traditional Logic Review is Traditional Logic by Martin Cothran. If you do not have this book and/or have not taken logic, just skip this. We will discuss in class.)

For the Figure of Speech box, you can use the worksheet in Appendix A or Mrs. Culp’s Figure of speech worksheet (When I looked at the preview “Figure of speech worksheet” did not appear in blue. It is linked, so just click on it! It is in Rich Text Format .rtf so I hope everyone can open.) Here is the sheet I worked up for the first lesson. Figures of Speech

Next week we will finish Lesson 2 including writing assignment 2.1 for a grade!

Happy Labor Day!

Directions for homework: Each exercise must be completed on a separate sheet of notebook paper. (Write the answers only, not the whole sentence.) Check your work each day using the answer key. This should be removed from the back of the book along with the tests and used with parental supervision only. Either have a section in your binder or a spiral notebook devoted solely to grammar. Do not save all your work for one day. According to the author of the book “Spaced repetition” is the key to learning this material. There will be a quiz in class almost every week covering that week’s material. Don’t worry if it takes you a long time at the beginning to complete the exercises; you will see a lot of improvement as you move through the material. The first week is mainly review to make sure you know the difference between a fragment and a sentence. If you find that you are having trouble here, you might need some extra practice.

Homework directions: Each week the student should read the assigned chapters (The Children’s Story Bible) and be prepared for a quiz over the material on Friday. Approximately every six weeks there will be a recitation day at school for the memory verses. (A copy of these verses is included-NKJV) Students should practice these verses each day. Every Friday we will work through the Sanctifinder sheets in class. If students practice these at home, they will progress through the various levels much faster. I have included a copy of each level with the syllabus. Copies will need to be made of these for home practice. All students who are new to the class must memorize the books of the Bible. This is easily achieved if they memorize three each week. We will be using the Bible Drill to locate the books each week in class.

The students copied sentences on Friday. For each of the sentences have them write three more sentences, substituting specific nouns for the underlined words. Then add another sentence or phrase to tell what happened next.

EXAMPLE: John stopped the ball with his body.

John stopped the soccer ball with his hip. As it bounced away, he charged after it.

John stopped the golf ball with his foot. ”You’re putting out of turn,” he snapped.

John stopped the baseball with his head, then crumpled to the ground.

Also, please have them write two pages (double spaced) about their summer. The purpose of this is to have something of their own to edit. As they learn new skills, they will go back and improve this paper. The only instructions they receive should be: “Write two pages about your summer.” If they type it , one or one and a half pages is sufficient. If you would, have them do this assignment first.

7th-8th grade

We completed the outline in class. The assignments for this week are to “vary the four sentences in word then in idea. For word variations list the word to be varied then the variations. After varying the key words, go on to vary the idea by rewriting the sentence.” These sentences are found in Lesson 1 “The Ant and the Chrysalis.” We went over this in class by using the first sentence as an example. Rewrite “The Ant and the Chrysalis” by inverting the sequence of events. The first sentence would be “Appearances are deceptive.” This exercise is a paraphrase of the fable. You might practice with your student by having them start by telling about the end of his day and go back to when he woke up in the morning.

Please have your son/daughter read the finished work out loud to you.

Have your student write a sentence using an example of anemographia and one with dendographia. We went over this in class.

Students received a “Composition Checklist.” Please review this with your son/daughter. Also students received a handout on outlining.

If your son/daughter has poor penmanship, please have them type and print out a copy for me.

Please remember you are the teacher, and I am the support. Call me if you have questions.

9-12

Students should finish Lesson 1. I gave them examples of each paragraph they are to write.

Students received a “Composition Checklist” and a handout on the eight paragraphs they are to write for the Chreia. Encourage them to model the example given by Aphthonius. Also students should complete the Variation Exercises on page 21 or 24, depending on the book they are using.

If your son/daughter has poor penmanship, please have them type and print out a copy for me.

Please remember you are the teacher, and I am the support. Call me if you have questions.
