Last week, you were either absent for class or took a little “field trip” during class. Therefore, none of you took Quiz #16. But don’t you worry your pretty little heads, I will get the quiz to you. (Neo: Katie will give it to your dad. Jonathan: you live with me.) Please finish your quiz this week and turn it in to me on Friday!

We’ll be spending 4 weeks on Plutarch. Don’t get bogged down in details of names or other unfamiliar references; just try to get the main idea of what’s going on in the story. Whenever there is a comparison of two lives, read that as well as the individual lives.

We are using Dryden’s translation—preferably the Modern Library 2-volume set edited by Arthur Hugh Clough. These are long books, and we are reading only a portion. You can buy (or see if the library has) these volumes, or you can find Plutarch online.

Modern Library edition, Volume I – http://tinyurl.com/plutarch1 (ISBN 0-375-75676-0)

Modern Library edition, Volume II – http://tinyurl.com/plutarch2 (ISBN 0-375-75677-9)

Dryden translation / Clough edition online:

http://digital.library.upenn.edu/webbin/gutbook/lookup?num=674

The specific assignments below are tentative, based on the reading schedule we used 4 years ago. There is a small chance I might change the reading a bit, so be sure to check back each week for updated assignments.

Feb. 3

First read George Grant’s article “Why Plutarch?” available here:

Read Arthur Hugh Clough’s preface to the Modern Library Plutarch.
