2010 – 2011

Weekly cummulative assignments will follow, but a 2-day study schedule for each week is located in the student journal (copy placed in your child’s folder).   Assignments may change slightly from week to week, so be sure to check the website each week for updates.

*I do request each child complete the following when assigned:   study fact sheet(s) … daily if necessary, complete all assigned reading before class, create the Personal Person when it is part of the assignment, complete all drawings/diagrams as assignedcomplete at least 4 at-home experiments with scientific speculation sheets (2 each semester).

Complete the following assignments by Friday …

08/27/10     Become familiar with the text and journal.   Choose wisely from the abundace of “extras” in your journal.  Older students should take note of the extra study opportunity provided in the Vocabulary Crossword.  Please note the Creation Confirmation Miniature Book beginning on pg A1 of your journal.  Put this miniature book together this week and follow the instructions given.   You will receive Fact Sheet 1 during class.

09/03/10     Lesson 1 – Introduction to Human Anatomy & Physiology.  Read thru pg 28.  *Drawing:  Cell Anatomy on pg 26…do this in your journal on pg provided.  Study Fact Sheet 1.  Be prepared for quiz of all facts associated with assigned reading.  We will view a video during class followed by a short discussion.

09/10/10     Lesson 1 – Continued.  Read thru pg 33.  *Personal Person:  Create Personal Person on pg 33 (supplies located in your journal … cut carefully and have fun).   QUIZ  this Friday … Fact Sheet 1.  I do recommend the Edible Cell project on pg 35 as a fun learning opportunity as an at-home experiment.

09/17/10     Lesson 2 – The Skeletal System.  Read thru pg 50.  Study Fact Sheet 2.  Be prepared for quiz of all facts associated with assigned reading.  Review Fact Sheet 1 at least 2x this week. 

09/24/10     Lesson 2 – Continued.  Read thru pg 52.  QUIZ  this Friday … Fact Sheet 2.  *Complete Label a Skeleton on pg 52.  *Personal Person Project:  Add some bones pg 52.  The Analyzing a Chicken Bone experiment on pg 53 is a fun experiment for all ages.

10/01/10     Lesson 3 – The Muscular System.  Read thru pg 64.  Study Fact Sheet 3 and be prepared for quiz of facts associated with reading.    Review Fact Sheets 1 & 2 this week.  I recommend that you attempt the “Fascinating Facts about the Muscular System” in your journal.

10/08/10     Lesson 3 – Continued.  Read thru pg 66.  QUIZ this Friday … Fact Sheet 3.   *Complete Personal Person Project:  Add some muscles on pg 67.  

We are planning a field trip to the hospital.  Be sure to study hard and be prepared to answer any questions their staff may ask you!!! 

10/15/10     Lesson 4 – The Digestive & Renal Systems.  READ thru pg 80.  Study Fact Sheet 4 and be prepared for quiz of all facts associated with assigned reading.  Review previous facts sheets at least once this week.  I recommend completing the “Fascinating Facts about the Digestive and Renal Systems.”

10/22/10     Lesson 4 – Continued.  READ thru pg 81.  QUIZ this Friday … Fact Sheet 4.   *Complete the Personal Person Project:  Add the digestive and renal systems pg 82. 

10/29/10     Lesson 5 – Health and Nutrition.  READ thru pg 95.  Study Fact Sheet 5 and be prepared for quiz of facts associated with assigned reading.   Review previous fact sheets at least once this week.  I recommend completing the “Facinating Facts about Health & Nutrition.”

11/05/10     Lesson 5 – Continued.  READ thru pg 98.  QUIZ this Friday … Fact Sheet 5.  *Complete project:  Food Pyramid on pg 99.   I recommend attempting the “Testing for Vitamin C” experiment on pg 99. 

11/12/10     Lesson 6 – The Respiratory System.  READ thru pg 110.  Study Fact Sheet 6 and be prepared for quiz of all facts associated with assigned reading.  Review previous fact sheets at least once this week.  We will complete the “Blue Breath” experiment (Journal pg 82) during class.  I recommend completing the “Fascinating Facts About the Respiratory System.”   You may want to work ahead by completing one or both the experiments for this lesson … pgs 116 and 117.

11/19/10     Lesson 6 – Continued.  READ thru pg 115.  QUIZ this Friday … Fact Sheet 6.  *Complete Personal Person Project:  Add a trachea, lungs and diaphragm pg 116 (Cut carefully & have fun!)   If you did not have time for an experiment last week … maybe this week?

11/26/10     Thanksgiving

12/03/10     Lesson 7 – Life in the Blood.  READ thru pg 126.  Study Fact Sheet 7 and be prepared for quiz of facts associated with assigned reading.   I recommend completing the Fascinating Facts about Blood.  *Complete the Blood Model project (begins under heading:  Plasma)  pgs 124-125.  Review previous fact sheets again this week.     We will view a video during class … followed by short discussion.   You or your child will receive a blood-typing kit today if you have chosen to participate in this project; as this information will be discussed in part 2 of Lesson 7. 

12/10/10     Lesson 7 – Continued.  If you chose to participate in the blood-typing project, please complete this before reading pgs 129-130 of assigned reading.  READ thru pg 131.  QUIZ this Friday … Fact Sheet 7.   *Complete the Notebooking Activity:  Blood Illustration pg 131.   NOTE … we will have a mid-term exam the Friday we return from our Christmas/New Year break.

01/07/11     MID-TERM EXAM.   Study fact sheets for lessons 1-7.  Extra credit will be taken from assigned reading and classroom activity/discussion.

EACH WEEK YOU SHOULD COME TO CLASS PREPARED TO TAKE NOTES

Assignments for EACH week:   READ all assigned pages BEFORE class, WORK all “On Your Own” and “Study Guide” questions for the assigned reading, perform chosen experiment(s) being sure to complete the hypothesis at the beginning (not the end) … make your supplies list 1 wk in advance, LEARN the information presented in the TABLES along with any unfamiliar vocabulary, COMPLETE module-specific assignments (posted or e-mailed), BRING all written assignments to class.

Please complete the assignments before Friday …

08/27/10 – Module #1:  THE BASICS.   READ thru pg 14 (Stop at Converting Between Systems) and follow the assignment instructions given above.   EXTRA:  Make 3×5 HELP CARDs for Tables 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 (bring these to class with your other written assignments), and learn this information … Yes, Table 1.3 is not in assigned reading for the week, but please make the card and begin learning the information … (Note:  Quiz over the tables next Friday, 9/3).  During class we will have a short measurement/conversion discussion; then we will perform Experiment 1.3 and learn the proper way to complete a scientific speculation sheet.

09/03/10 – Module 1 continued.  READ pg 14 – end of module and follow the assignment instructions given above.   QUIZ this Friday:  Including but not limited to tables, conversion/math.   We will have a short discussion of hand-outs given during class.

If you feel behind already, or even a little unsure … give science a little extra study time over the next few weeks.   We will move on to the next module as scheduled …

09/10/10  Module 2.  READ thru pgs 25-35 and follow the assignment instructions given above.  Complete and begin studying your Module 1 Summary (answers to be e-mailed this week).  Read over the handouts given during class Friday … correlating the information with that viewed in the DVD we watched during class Friday.  You have one more week to study for the Module 1 quiz … to be given during class this Friday.  You should begin learing the elements … found on the inside cover of your text … instructions were given during class … 30 weeks left of Excelsior left to learn them … try to learn at least 7 new elements with their symbol and atomic # each week!!!

09/17/10 – Module 2 continued.  READ thru the remaining pages  (36 to end of unit) for this module and complete the assignments given above.  Continue practicing the conversion math from Module 1 AND work on those elements with their symbols and atomic #s.
