Composition and Grammar 6

9/4/10

For Sept. 10

For grammar, complete assignments for Chapter 3 in Shurley.  Do not do the Shurley writing assignments. Do complete the Daily Grams and  Editor and Chief . Please complete the chapter test. I will not normally post for grammar. The assignment for each chapter is the same. You may follow the syllabus to know which chapter.

Composition:

In class, we discussed using more specific nouns instead of the words person and thing.

Write a paragraph describing your living room. Your description should be double-spaced.

In your description, be specific. Chairs can be identified as recliners, rockers, arm-chairs,  Queen-Anne chairs, wing-backed chairs.  Pictures can be paintings, prints, landscapes, portraits. Take time to think , ask questions, and make a list before you write.

Composition

8/28/10

The students copied sentences on Friday.  For each of the sentences have them write three more sentences, substituting specific nouns for the underlined words. Then add another sentence or phrase to tell what happened next.

EXAMPLE:  John stopped the ball with his body.

John stopped the soccer ball with his hip. As it bounced away, he charged after it.

John stopped the golf ball with his foot.  ”You’re putting out of turn,” he snapped.

John stopped the baseball with his head, then crumpled to the ground.

Also, please have them write two pages (double spaced) about their summer. The purpose of this is to have something of their own to edit. As they learn new skills, they will go back and improve this paper. The only instructions they  receive should be: “Write two pages about your summer.”  If they type it , one or one and a half  pages is sufficient.  If you would, have them do this assignment first.
